Meeting Description

Who

Anyone who is interested in attending a casual chess get together. All levels of players welcome, even total first timers. We will try to have a few boards and clock (for those who like speed chess). Come play and learn from each other.

Why

Chess is a game that challenges and expands your conceptual thinking, strategy, decision making, and discipline. It's a great way to challenge yourself and others, and moreover, it's a game which you can play for the rest of your life. Come swing by.

Organized by

Details

I'm trying to start this club up. I'll try to contact a few cafes and find the best place. If you have any recommendations on the location or the date/time, shoot me an email! TomVillalon(at)gmail(dot)com

I'm thinking we can meet up twice a month at a local cafe. Depending on the number of people interested, we may at some point instate dues (maybe a dollar per person) to buy some boards and split fees for maintaining this meetup. As for now, we'll keep everything free and try to find boards from other interested players.

Erin, interesting thought. Do you mean learning about them by talking as you play or by observation of playing style? I'm usually too focused on getting out of the traps my opponent has set to carry much of a conversation!

I will try to make it and give some lessons, as I'm a National Master. I also teach group classes in Sammamish and sell nice sets and clocks, check out www.groupchessclass.info. -Bruce

Has anyone else found chess to be a good way to spend time with people you've just met? I've had a lot of fun learning about people just by playing chess with them pretty soon after we meet. Of course they're probably observing me too...hm. Why hadn't I thought of that before?
